Have Some Family Fun During Your Spring Break

family picSpring is almost here! For many, this time of the year means a trip to some remote beach to enjoy the nice warm sun! However, if you’re like most families, that may not be in the budget this year. And that’s okay! That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take that time off and enjoy the changing temperatures. Here are some great things you can do on your very own Spring Break at home! Even better, these are family-fun activities!

  • Start a small garden. Let your kids pick an herb, flower, or a vegetable (or one of each) and plant them from seeds in small pots on a windowsill. It’s a great way to teach them where all their veggies come from and show them how easy it is to start their own garden.
  • Picnics outside (weather permitting) are an excellent way to get some fresh air. The best thing to do is to go for a hike and pack a lunch. When you get to your destination, enjoy the views while you savor your PB&J’s or whatever else you brought. Lunches really do taste best when eaten outdoors.
  • Go for a bike ride. Find an interesting route to take and go sight-seeing on a bike.
  • Volunteer in your local community. For older kids, it’s important to show them how they can get involved in their community and volunteer. There are plenty of organizations looking for some help, and many of the duties may be outside, so you can continue to enjoy that bright spring sunshine!
  • Build something. Bird houses, tree houses, sandboxes, mazes, swings, and other cool things! The sooner you can show your kids how to be handy, the better. When they grow up, they won’t be afraid to try and tackle other projects on their own!
  • Discover. Be a tourist in your own town. Go online and look up some fun things to do that you’ve never done. The only rule? You can’t go anywhere you’ve been before. You likely will find some incredible activities that you didn’t know existed or wish you would have visited many years prior!
  • Go camping. If it’s warm enough, pick a site to go camping – this will take you out of your normal surroundings and focus all your attention on the family. Invite other families to come along for a fun and exciting adventure!
  • Farmers market day. Take a field trip to your local Farmer’s market and have the kids help pick out tonight’s dinner. They’ll love choosing the brightly colored fruit and vegetables. When you get home, they can be your assistant chefs in the kitchen and help you put it all together.

Well, this should be enough ideas to get you started on planning an incredible spring break with your kids. Keep in mind: Many of these activities don’t require a lot of time! So, even if your kids have time off for Spring Break and you don’t, you can still squeeze one or two in! You can never have enough quality family time!

Beware of Leaks around Roof Boots

roof bootsThere is a potentially dangerous and costly problem lurking in our neighborhoods. It has to do with what we call “roof boots.” They are the coverings that go over the vent pipes that stick out of your roof. Many of them have been allowing rain and melted snow to leak into homes.

Every home has plumbing vent pipes. These pipes run up from a kitchen or bathroom and out through your roof. The problems arise when the coverings around these pipes peel up or get shifted with the natural movements that occur on your roof from expansion and contraction. Some roof boots can move with your roof – but not the type that most builders put on homes. In fact, the ones used on many are the cheap, ineffective kind. That means that it’s not a matter of “if,” but “when” these roof boots fail and water starts leaking into your home.

If your roof boot covering fails, rain water will leak into your home and travel along the vent pipe. This is where the problems begin. The average amount of damage to homes from water is about $5,000! Damage can occur to expensive hardwood floors, walls and ceilings, and to “hidden” areas behind walls, such as insulation and drywall. Not only could this run in the tens of thousands of dollars to clean up and repair, but it promotes the growth of mold and mildew, which can have dangerous health consequences.

Routine roof inspections will identify the health of your roof boots and allow for replacement before leaking occurs. This is an inexpensive proactive measure to save you lots of worry and potentially money. Give us a call to schedule an inspection. Let us make sure your roof boots are functioning properly, as well as inspect the entire roof.

Tips for Safe Winter Driving

Winter DrivingSchneider Roofing and Remodeling isn’t just concerned with your safety in the home – we want you to be safe all the time! With all the cold temperatures and plenty of precipitation during these winter months, driving the roads can be treacherous! Be prepared if you get stranded for any period of time by having a winter driving kit. Here are some suggested items that your kit should contain:

  • Bag of sand or salt (or kitty litter)
  • Traction mats
  • Snow shovel
  • Snow brush
  • Ice scraper
  • Jumper cables
  • Flashlight and portable flashing light (and extra batteries)
  • Warning devices such as flares or emergency lights
  • Fuel-line deicer
  • Extra windshield washer fluid
  • Roll of paper towels
  • Blanket
  • Extra warm clothing and blanket
  • First-aid kit
  • Snack bars or other “emergency” food and water
  • Matches and emergency candles (only use candles with a window opened to prevent build-up of carbon monoxide)
  • Road maps

Keep Warm When It’s Cold Outside!

With all this cold weather, I can’t help but put this out there for all of you! Here’s a great winter recipe that will take less than an hour to make!

Ingredients
Soup 1 3 ½ cups potatoes, peeled and diced
• 1/3 cup diced celery
• 1/3 cup finely chopped onion
• ¾ cup diced cooked ham
• 3 ¼ cups water
• 2 tablespoons chicken bouillon granules
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon ground pepper
• 5 tablespoons butter
• 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
• 2 cups milk

Directions
1. Combine potatoes, celery, onion, ham and water in a stockpot. Bring to a boil then cook over medium heat until potatoes are tender, about 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in chicken bouillon, salt and pepper.
2. In a separate saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat. Whisk in flour with a fork and cook, stirring constantly until thick, about 1 minute. Slowly stir in milk as to not allow lumps to form. Continue stirring over medium-low heat until thick, about 4 to 5 minutes.
3. Stir milk mixture into the stockpot and cook soup until heated through. Serve immediately.

The Time-Value of a Roof Inspection

alarm clockOnly Two Hours of Your Time
Consider for a moment what you spend a couple of hours doing: two hours watching a movie, more than a few hours going to a sporting event with the family, a couple hours window shopping at the mall, etc. If you’re like a lot people these days, you spend two hours surfing the Web! These are all activities that most people don’t think twice about spending a few hours doing.

Keeping that in mind, wouldn’t you be willing to spend a few hours walking around your home with a highly trained technician from Schneider Roofing while he evaluates your home and your roof—especially if it could enhance your family’s comfort and safety? I’m sure you would agree that would be a good use of your time.

Your home’s roof can change over the course of a year. You would be amazed to know how much it can shift, alter, and even begin to breakdown. Sometimes changes can present safety concerns you wouldn’t know about… if not for a highly trained technician’s eye. Knowing how much your home’s roof can change in a year, we recommend that you have your roof completely inspected at least once a year. Often it may not even take two hours. But at the end of that short amount of time, you’ll receive a report on the shape of your roof. You’ll learn of any sections that should be “watched” and you’ll know if it’s in 100% proper working condition.

Your Roof Ventilation

Few things are more misunderstood about the home than attic ventilation. In essence, all ventilation is about circulating air to keep it fresh and to reduce moisture levels. The American Institute of Architects estimates that 90 percent of homes in the United States have unacceptably high levels of moisture. Understanding whether your home could benefit from some form of attic ventilation might just be a roof-saver.

If you haven’t had a roofer inspect your roof carefully in a while, it might be time to have Schneider Roofing and Remodeling over. We’ll conduct a ventilation analysis  and can quickly show you if you need to add venting that could add YEARS to your roof’s life, or if your home is perfectly fine! Helpful Roofing Consumer Hint

When something breaks in your home, it catches you off guard. You’re irritated and upset. You immediately start looking for a service company to help you. Maybe you ask a friend or family member for a reference. You hope that the service technician is truthful and won’t take advantage of you, but how can you know for sure?

Be sure the technician provides you with an upfront price BEFORE work begins—and there shouldn’t be any “convenience” charges that they don’t tell you about upfront. Sticker shock should never be something you experience, especially after your project is complete and you’re stuck with an outrageous bill!

That’s why with Schneider Roofing and Remodeling you will know what the investment is for your repair or new system before a single tool is touched! That’s just one helpful consumer hint you deserve to know!

Extend the Life of Your Roof

Roof VentilationYou count on your roof to protect your family from the nasty weather, and it seems to be doing its job…. After all, you don’t notice any leaks! What you may not realize is your roof is prematurely aging. The roof you expected to last several years may be withering away… and you just haven’t noticed it yet. In fact, your roof’s lifespan could be cut in half!

In the fall and winter months, the temperatures outside begin to drop, and so does the temperature inside your attic. At some point, it will get cold enough that you’ll turn on your furnace. The warm air from your furnace will rise from your home into your attic. When it hits the cold attic air, it forms moisture. If your attic is properly ventilated, moisture isn’t a problem. The natural flow of air through your vents will quickly dry it. However, if your home is one of the 90% that aren’t ventilated properly, moisture can’t dry! Instead, it sits and festers in your attic. The moisture can attract insects like termites. Eventually, the moisture will cause your roof to rot! Before you know it, you may need to replace your roof that’s only five or six years old! But this premature-aging process isn’t the only thing your roof might be suffering from….

Moisture in an attic is an absolute breeding ground for mold. If you have an asthma or allergy sufferer in your household, they could experience severe agitation from this mold growth. In fact, maybe they’ve been enduring this for years—this could definitely be the case if you have an older roof and you have NOT had your roof inspected in a long time.

Experts recommend homeowners have their roofs inspected at least once annually. It’s the best way to avoid any large problems from developing—by eliminating potential issues immediately. Give Schneider Roofing and Remodeling a call today at 314-378-6623 for an inspection today! Don’t hesitate and let your roof waste away, or worse, become a breeding ground for mold.

Roofing Repair Expert

Save thousands of dollars by pushing off a new roof and instead repair your old roof, allowing it to last years longer!

It’s an all too common occurrence. You know there’s something wrong with your roof. Maybe you have discolored patches, algae or moss buildup, loose or  missing shingles, exposed nail, or maybe even a loose gutter. You search online and call a roofer and schedule an appointment. The contractor says he’ll send someone by to take a look at it.

A few days pass by, and you don’t hear anything. Then, when getting the mail, you notice that you have a letter from the roofing company. Inside it, you find an estimate for a brand-new roof—plus, it has a note from the contractor asking you to call him. Great! You just wanted an evaluation!

You make the phone call only to find that the contractor insists that the only option for you is to replace your roof. It’s the only way to fix your problem…. Well, that’s not what you called for. But now, he’s thrown a quote in front of you for thousands of dollars worth of work. You were just hoping for a repair!

Many Roofing Contractors HATE Doing Repairs—NOT Schneider Roofing and Remodeling!

You may not realize this, but many roofing contractors absolutely hate doing repairs! They see it as a nuisance—in some situations, they’ll just try and sell you a new roof so they don’t have to deal with the “headaches” of repairing your roof! (Even more frightening, many roofs that are installed today don’t even meet manufacturer’s specifications. As a result, your warranty is voided before you even have your roof for a day… but that’s for another discussion!)

That’s not how we conduct business at Schneider Roofing and Remodeling.

First and foremost, when you call us to evaluate your home, you will know when our roofing specialist comes by. You won’t receive some impersonal piece of paper in the mail. Secondly, you are never told what you should do. Instead, you will be given a number of options. You will be able to choose the option that best fits your situation. Among your options will likely include several repairs! At Schneider Roofing and Remodeling, we love performing roofing repairs! It’s our specialty. Where some contractors may see a roof that needs to be replaced,  Again, you get to decide your home’s future… not us!
